What is the C.I.E.S.?
The C.I.E.S. (Centro de Investigaciones Ecológicas Subtropicales) is a biological research center situated inside the Iguazú National Park in Argentina.
The Iguazú National Park is placed along the Iguazú river, who rapresent the border between Argentina and Brasil, and preserves the original forest of this region, the "selva paranaense" with its subtropical landscape.
This unique place it is famous for the presence of the second largest waterfalls system of the world, declared World Heritage by the UNESCO, but it is also the natural reserve with the largest number of endemic species in Argentina.
The C.I.E.S. is open to all the researchers who have been authorized to operate inside the Park, offering a place to rest and work directly inside the forest without renouncing to all the comforts and services useful for a scientific research.
The mission of the CIES is:
- To incentivate and help the research about the subtropical ecosystems especially in the aspects who concern about the ecoregion of the Selva Paranaense.
- To clarify and activate the development of prioritary branches of research who could solve the conservation problem in the ecoregion.
- To bring basic informations useful to take decisions about the management of the Iguazú National Park and any organization who could demand for.
- To promote and organize the training of human resources in the fields of biological conservation, use of natural resources and management protected areas, especially refering to the ecoregion, offering a possibility to master students, tecnicos(?) y profesionales.
- To develop a biology bibliographical reference center, to help the activities of research and training.
The C.I.E.S. relies on the Dirección Nacional de Conservación de Áreas Protegidas, on the Administración de Parques Nacionales, on the Delegación Técnica Regional NEA and for the aspect of management and operativness on the Intendencia of Iguazú National Park.
